How Bullies Are Created

Bullies are created in environments where there is

severe competition, among siblings, for attention or things.

Often bullies have experienced physical or emotional abuse.

Loner Bullies and Bully Groups

Some bullies are loners who bully alone.

Lone bullies are often violent.

Most bullies have friends who they involve in bullying others.

These bullies may be violent or nonviolent,

using exclusion, name calling, and ridicule as bullying tools.

Gangs are bullying groups which use bullying to intimidate victims

and protection from bullying to recruit members.

Seemingly popular groups of students may engage in

psychological bullying or exclusion.

A sign that this exclusionary bullying is occurring

are areas of the school where only this group may sit or stand,

and activities in which only they may participate.

Why Are Some Kids Bully Targets?

There is nothing wrong with the victim of bullying

which causes them to be a bully target.

  • Bully targets may be new in the school community, or naturally shy.
  • They may be a special needs student with a physical, intellectual, or emotional challenge.
  • They may be a member of an ethnic, physical, or religious minority.
  • Youth with Asperger Syndrome, gay and lesbian youth, short kids, and overweight kids may become bully targets.
  • The target may be a relatively high achiever.

Bully targets generally follow the rules.

Strategies Which Don't Help Bully Targets

It's tempting to suggest what we were told, when we were young:

Tell someone! (This should help but often doesn't)

Hit back!

Stay away from them!

Stand up to the bully!

Choose other friends!

The biggest mistake is to suggest that there is something

a youth could change about themselves, to stop the bullying.

Essentially, these suggestions ask a bully target

to take care of the problem themselves.
